Common Nairobi-specific bike issues we see every week

After thousands of services from CBD to Karen to Ngong, we’ve mapped the problems that come with riding in Nairobi specifically. Knowing them saves you money — most are preventable.

1. Dust-eaten bearings — headset, BB, hubs, suspension pivots

Kenyan trail dust is fine, silica-heavy, and abrasive. It works past seals and grinds bearings to powder. Symptoms: crunchy feel when turning bars, clicking or knocking from BB, slight play at the crank, harsh feel over bumps that used to be smooth. Weekly commuters get 12–18 months on stock bearings; twice-a-week trail riders get 9–15 months. Bearings service starts at KES 1,500 for a headset regrease. We stock sealed cartridge bearings from KES 350 each and replace during Silver or Gold service.

2. Muddy chain rot from Karura and Ngong rains

A muddy chain left uncleaned for a week rusts, seizes at pin-plate joints, and stretches fast. What was a KES 1,200 chain becomes a KES 5,500 chain-plus-cassette replacement inside a month. If you ride Karura or Kereita in the wet, degrease and re-lube the chain the same day. We stock wet-condition lubes (KES 950–1,800). Bring your bike in the day after a wet ride for a free chain-wear check.

3. Punctures from unpaved shortcut sections

Nairobi cyclists take shortcuts across construction sites, unfinished bypass shoulders, and murram tracks between neighbourhoods. Sharp acacia thorns and steel fragments from construction are the two biggest puncture sources. Solutions in order of cost-effectiveness: tubeless tyre setup with sealant (KES 1,200 per wheel plus sealant), heavy-duty puncture-protection tubes (KES 900 each), Slime pre-filled tubes (KES 650). We recommend tubeless for anyone riding more than twice a week — pays back in avoided punctures within 6 months.

4. Brake pad wear on Ngong and Limuru descents

A regular Ngong descender chews through a set of resin brake pads in 6–10 weeks, less in the wet. Signs to replace: squealing that doesn’t go away after a clean, uneven pad wear (one side worn faster), pad thickness under 1mm, and lever pull that reaches the bar. Pads KES 400–1,800 depending on brand. We keep Shimano, Tektro, Magura and generic replacements in stock. Silver Service always includes a pad-thickness check.

5. Cable stretch from Nairobi humidity + dust

Steel inner cables stretch faster in Nairobi’s humidity, and dust in housing makes shifts feel heavy. Symptom: gears indexed perfectly last month but skipping now. Fix is a cable and housing swap — KES 400 labour plus KES 250–650 in parts per cable. Silver Service includes inspection and replacement if worn.

6. Wheel dishing from potholes on Thika Road, Mombasa Road, and cracked back roads

Nairobi tarmac has more potholes per kilometre than any capital in East Africa. A hard hit dishes a wheel — the rim runs off-centre and starts rubbing brake pads. Symptom: brake rub in one spot per rotation, wobble in the wheel visible from behind. Wheel true KES 800–1,500. Book with your Bronze tune-up.

7. Sun-damaged rubber and dried grease

A bike left on a Nairobi balcony bakes at up to 55°C in direct sun. Tyre sidewalls crack, grip rubber hardens, grease in bearings dries out. Symptoms: chalky-looking tyres, hardened grips, harsh bearing feel. Cover your bike or store indoors. Full re-grease is part of Silver and Gold services.

8. Corroded e-bike battery connectors from Nairobi long-rains

E-bike battery pins corrode when moisture gets past the housing seal. Symptoms: intermittent power cutout, “battery not detected” errors, reduced range. Clean and re-grease with dielectric compound — KES 1,500 as part of e-bike diagnostic. Store the e-bike battery indoors during the March–May and October–December rains.

When to service, when to replace — the honest math

Sometimes the kindest thing a workshop says is: don’t spend the money. Our rules:

• Repair cost under 25% of replacement cost: fix it, easy call
• Repair cost 25–50%: fix if frame, wheels and fork are sound; replace if two of three are tired
• Repair cost over 50%: replace, unless the frame is genuinely premium or sentimental

Example 1: a KES 12,000 supermarket bike needing KES 6,000 drivetrain plus KES 3,000 brakes plus KES 3,000 wheel — that’s KES 12,000 in repairs on a KES 12,000 bike. Buy a new Phoenix or Cruztrek at KES 25,000 and be happier.

Example 2: a KES 180,000 Giant Talon with worn chain, brake pads and a fork service — KES 12,000 restores a bike worth six figures. Fix it every time.

We are the authorised warranty handler for Giant, SAVA, CAMP, Cruztrek, TWITTER, NOOYAH and Phoenix in Kenya. Warranty processing is free for bikes bought from Cycle Africa. Here’s exactly how it works.

What’s covered

• Frame — manufacturing defects: cracks not caused by impact, delamination, bad bonds, alignment issues from production
• Components — Shimano, SRAM, RockShox etc. covered under standard OEM component warranties (typically 1 year)
• Paint & finish — for the first 3 months only; peeling not caused by chemicals or impact

What’s NOT covered

• Crash damage, scratches, dents
• Wear items — chain, cassette, pads, tyres, cables, grips
• Damage from overtightening bolts (torque wrench matters)
• Rider exceeding frame weight limits

Claim process (5 steps)

1. Bring bike + original receipt + a short description of the defect to Dar es Salaam Road
2. Our workshop lead documents the fault with photos and files the claim to the brand
3. The brand reviews and either approves replacement/repair, or requests further inspection
4. Parts arrive at our workshop; we fit them and torque-check
5. You collect the bike — with new component warranty starting from the fit date

Free courtesy pickup within Nairobi CBD ring

This is our biggest differentiator over Sports House, Bike.co.ke and the rest. Book a Silver or Gold service and we collect your bike from anywhere inside the CBD ring — free. That’s roughly:

• Uhuru Highway to Haile Selassie in the south
• Muthaiga and Parklands in the north
• Westlands and Kilimani in the west
• Eastleigh and Pangani in the east

Outside that ring — Karen, Runda, Ridgeways, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Kasarani — pickup is KES 500–1,500 each way depending on distance.

For countrywide riders in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru or Eldoret, we coordinate with major couriers. Typical turnaround for a full Silver Service including return shipping: 5–7 days. Ship the bike boxed; we send back with a full torque-audited assembly.

How do I know when to replace my chain vs service it?

Chain wear is measured with a chain-checker tool. Replace at 0.5% wear on 11–12 speed drivetrains, 0.75% on 8–10 speed. Beyond that the chain has chewed the cassette. Free chain-wear check at every workshop visit.
