Giant Contend in Kenya — 2026 Entry Road Bike Buyer’s Guide

By Maxwell Mukaria Mwenda, CEO Cycle Africa Bikes · Last updated 2026-07-02

The Giant Contend is where most Kenyan road cyclists actually start. It is the bike that turns a curious commuter into a Sunday group rider on Ngong Road, and it does it without asking you to spend a million shillings before you even know if you like road cycling. Built around a lightweight ALUXX aluminium frame and a full carbon fork, the Contend gives you real road geometry, real gear ratios, and real Shimano drivetrains — the same components that ride Kereita and Iten every weekend.

This guide covers the entire Giant Contend Kenya lineup, starting with the Contend 3 at KES 84,999. If you are choosing your first road bike, or upgrading from a hybrid, this is the honest breakdown Maxwell and the Cycle Africa Bikes team would give you in the showroom.

The full Contend lineup available in Kenya

Five variants, two families. The standard Contend (3 and 1) is the pure entry road bike with rim brakes and traditional geometry. The Contend AR (3, 2, 1) is the modern endurance road bike with hydraulic disc brakes, wider tyre clearance, and Giant’s D-Fuse comfort cockpit. Here is the line-up, with the price wherever the bike is listed on our site.

What each variant is best for

The absolute first-timer — Contend 3

You have never owned a drop-bar bike. You want to try Sunday Ngong Road group rides without committing your rent to it. The Contend 3 at KES 84,999 is the answer. Shimano Claris is entry level but it shifts crisply, the ALUXX frame is genuinely light (around 9.8kg), and the carbon fork takes the sting out of Kenyan tarmac. You will not outgrow the frame — you will outgrow the components in two or three years, and by then you will know exactly what to upgrade to.

The serious weekend rider on a real budget — Contend 1

Same frame family as the 3, but Shimano Sora 2×9 gives you an extra cog, better lever ergonomics, and noticeably smoother shifts under load on the Ngong climbs. This is the sweet spot for anyone who is confident they will still be riding in twelve months. Rim brakes are honestly fine for dry Nairobi tarmac and it saves you 20-30k versus the disc variants.

The endurance rider who does long Sunday miles — Contend AR 2

The AR frame is a different animal. Slightly longer wheelbase, taller head tube, D-Fuse seatpost and handlebar that flex vertically to eat road buzz, and clearance for 32mm tyres so you can actually survive the section of Kangundo Road that pretends to be tarmac. Add Shimano 105 R7100 12-speed and hydraulic discs and this is the bike for riders training for the Iten to Eldoret loop or Sagana centuries.

The rider who wants one bike for life — Contend AR 1

Top-shelf ALUXX SL frame, 105 12-speed, hydraulic disc, and — crucially — Giant SL 2 tubeless-ready wheels out of the box. At KES 149,999 the AR 1 costs less than most carbon frames alone. This is your Kajiado gravel-tarmac hybrid rider, your Naivasha weekender, your first serious road build.

The commuter with intent — Contend AR 3

Hydraulic discs, 32mm tyre clearance, Tiagra 2×10. Fit 32mm tyres and it handles the potholes on Mombasa Road on the way to work; swap to 28s for Sunday group rides. One bike, two lives.

How the Contend compares to alternatives

Honest answer: at every price point in Kenya the Contend has direct competition. Here is how it stacks up against SAVA and CAMP road bikes with similar parts.

BikePrice (KES)FrameGroupsetBrakesVerdict
Giant Contend 1Ask usALUXX aluSora 2×9RimGiant dealer support and a full workshop in Nairobi
SAVA Warwinds 3.0Ask usCarbonShimano Sora 2×9RimCarbon frame at the price is tempting; parts availability is not
CAMP SR 03Ask usAlu + carbon forkShimano Sora 2×9RimExcellent value; slightly heavier than Contend
Giant Contend AR 2Ask usALUXX SL alu105 R7100 2×12Hydraulic discThe bike we recommend most: 12-speed 105 and hydraulic discs

The verdict: if you want a carbon frame at 130k, buy the SAVA or the CAMP and know what you are getting. If you want a bike that Giant Kenya will warranty, that we can service same-day, and that holds resale value on the Nairobi second-hand market — buy the Contend.

Real-world Kenya use

Ngong Road Sunday group rides

This is where the Contend was born to live. The 6am roll-out from Ngong Road to Kiserian and back on the Contend 1 is honestly one of the best-value cycling experiences in Nairobi. Sora shifting handles the climb up to Corner Baridi without drama, and rim brakes are fine because it never rains before 9am on the Ngong Escarpment (well, mostly).

Karura Forest tarmac loops

Not for the gravel — you want a Talon or Escape for that — but the tarmac perimeter and the KFS access roads are perfect first-timer road territory. The Contend AR 3 with 32mm tyres handles both surfaces without complaint.

Two Rivers to Ruaka commuter loops

Flat, mostly tarmac, real traffic. Contend AR 3 with 32mm tyres, a set of Ass Savers, and hydraulic discs turns this into a genuinely fast 30km midweek loop.

Kajiado, Sagana and Naivasha long rides

Once you cross 80km rides you feel every gram of stiffness in your frame. This is where the Contend AR 2 and AR 1 justify their price — D-Fuse cockpit and 30-32mm tyres on tubeless SL 2 wheels make 120km days survivable.

Iten training weekends

If you are serious enough to fly a bike to Iten for altitude training, you are ready for the AR 1. The 105 12-speed climbing gears are exactly what you need on the descent-into-Kerio-Valley climb-back-up combination.

Warranty and service via Cycle Africa Bikes

Every Giant Contend sold by Cycle Africa Bikes comes with our 6-month warranty, and we service what we sell. As East Africa’s leading Giant bicycles dealer, we back the bike from our own workshop — no lender, no fine print.

  • 6-month warranty on the bike
  • Free assembly on purchase
  • Same-day service for any in-stock part at the Dar es Salaam Road workshop
  • Bike fit sizing advice at the flagship before you buy
  • Loaner bike available during major repairs (subject to availability)

We also stock genuine Shimano Claris, Sora, Tiagra and 105 spare parts — chains, cassettes, brake pads, shifters — so a service does not turn into a three-week wait for imports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Giant Contend a good first road bike in Kenya?

Yes, and honestly it is the one we recommend most often. The Contend 3 at KES 84,999 and the Contend 1 give you a real ALUXX aluminium frame, carbon fork, and Shimano drivetrain — the exact combination you need to learn road cycling on Ngong Road group rides without overspending. You can grow into it for years.

What is the difference between Contend and Contend AR?

The standard Contend is a traditional road bike with rim brakes and 28mm tyre clearance — pure Sunday tarmac. The Contend AR is Giant’s endurance road bike: hydraulic disc brakes, 32mm tyre clearance, D-Fuse comfort seatpost and handlebar, and slightly relaxed geometry. AR is better for Kenyan road conditions and long-day rides to Sagana or Naivasha.

Should I buy a Giant Contend or a carbon SAVA at the same price?

Depends on how you weigh warranty and dealer support. A SAVA gives you a carbon frame for less; the Contend gives you our 6-month warranty, same-day service parts in Nairobi, and stronger resale value on the Kenyan second-hand market. If you plan to ride for years, the Contend wins. If you want cheapest carbon possible, SAVA is honest value — we sell both.

Can I pay for a Giant Contend in instalments?

We offer lipa pole pole — pay in bits at your own pace, no lender, no interest, no paperwork. You collect the bike once it is fully paid. WhatsApp +254 725 511513 to arrange.

Where can I see the Giant Contend in Nairobi?

Visit our Dar es Salaam Road flagship, home of our dedicated Giant showroom. WhatsApp us first to check your size is on the floor; any Contend not in stock is available on order.

What size Contend should I buy?

Contend runs XS through XL. Rough guide: XS 155-165cm, S 165-172cm, M 172-180cm, L 180-188cm, XL 188cm+. But height alone is a bad predictor — torso length, arm length, and flexibility matter more. Come to the flagship for a bike fit before you commit.
