Two quick notes. First, the 2024 Talon 3 closeout at KES 78,000 is the best value bike in our entire showroom right now, and we have only two left. Second, the Talon 29 4 spare at 62,000 exists specifically for students and teenagers who need something bombproof for weekend rides but do not need shifting sophistication. It shares 90% of its DNA with the standard Talon 4.
What each Talon variant is best for
The weekend Karura rider on a budget: Talon 4 or Talon 29 4
If your riding is mostly Karura Forest fire roads, occasional Kereita loops, and getting to and from Westlands on the weekends, the Talon 4 at KES 65,000 is genuinely all the bike you need. The 3×7 Tourney drivetrain is not fancy, but it shifts, and mechanical disc brakes stop you fine in dry Nairobi weather. This is the bike I put my nephew on. He rode it hard for eighteen months before he asked for an upgrade.
The rider who wants to grow into the sport: Talon 3
The Talon 3 at KES 85,000 (or the 2024 closeout at 78,000) is the sweet spot for 70% of buyers walking into our flagship. You get the proper ALUXX frame, which is meaningfully lighter and better-welded than the base Talon 4 frame. The Altus 2×8 drivetrain is what Giant fits on bikes twice this price in Europe. If you plan to ride Ngong hills singletrack, this is where I would start.
The serious hobbyist who rides every Saturday: Talon 2
Hydraulic brakes change everything. On the long descents from Ngong town down towards Kiserian, or on the technical drops in Kereita, mechanical brakes make your hands tired and your braking inconsistent. The Talon 2 at KES 105,000 gives you real Tektro hydraulic stoppers, a proper XCM fork with lockout for climbs, and Alivio 2×9 shifting. This is the bike for someone doing 40-60km rides regularly.
The rider chasing performance: Talon 1
The Talon 1 at KES 135,000 is the enthusiast pick. ALUXX SL frame (lighter and stiffer), 1×10 Deore drivetrain (simpler, no front derailleur to fuss with), and a fork with proper lockout that actually holds. If you are thinking about Iten training camps, Sagana river rides, or eventually racing amateur XC events, buy this one and do not look back.
How the Talon compares to alternatives
Let me be honest. The Talon is not the only good hardtail in Kenya. We sell SAVA and CAMP because they genuinely compete in specific price bands. Here is how they line up.

Honest verdict: CAMP SR Pro at 92,000 has better paper specs than the Talon 3 for less than the Talon 2. If you buy on spec sheet alone, buy the CAMP. But Giant’s ALUXX frame geometry, warranty support, and long-term parts availability in Kenya are still better. The Talon holds its resale value roughly 20-30% higher than any other hardtail brand we stock. If you plan to sell in two years and upgrade, Talon wins every time.
Real-world Kenya use
Karura Forest
Any Talon handles Karura. The fire roads are fast, mostly smooth murram, and the singletrack near the waterfall is playful but not aggressive. Talon 4 is enough. If you find yourself riding Karura more than twice a week, you will want the Talon 2 or 3 for the better fork.
Ngong Hills
This is where fork quality starts to matter. The descent from the third hill towards Kona Baridi is loose, rutted, and long. The XCM fork on the Talon 2 and 1 with lockout is a real upgrade over the XCE on the Talon 3. Hydraulic brakes are non-negotiable if you ride Ngong monthly.
Kajiado and Kitengela trails
Long, dusty, exposed. This is XC country. The Talon 1 with 1×10 Deore is made for this: simple shifting, no dropped chains, and the ALUXX SL frame stays comfortable over three-hour rides. Bring two water bottles.
Naivasha, Sagana and Kereita weekend trips
Kereita’s downhill section humbles cheap bikes. Do not take a Talon 4 there. Talon 2 or 1 minimum. Sagana river rides are Talon 3 friendly. Naivasha’s Hell’s Gate is easy on any Talon; just watch your tyre pressure on the rocks.
Iten training
If you are heading to Iten to train, you are on a Talon 1. The altitude and the terrain deserve the better bike.
Nairobi commuting
Any Talon commutes fine. Fit slick tyres or semi-slicks, keep the suspension locked out, and you have a rugged commuter that laughs at Nairobi potholes. Many of our Kilimani and Westlands customers ride Talons to work daily.

1. Visit the Dar es Salaam Road flagship. This is our main showroom. Every Talon variant is on the floor or one call away. Free assembly on purchase, bike-fit sizing advice, test ride on our loop, same-day handover if you buy off the floor. This is where I personally take serious buyers.

Which Talon should I buy as my first mountain bike?
For most first-time buyers in Nairobi, the Talon 3 at KES 85,000 or the 2024 closeout at 78,000 is the right answer. It has the proper ALUXX frame, decent 2×8 shifting, and enough fork to handle Karura and light Ngong riding. If your budget is tighter, the Talon 4 at 65,000 is genuinely good. Only stretch to the Talon 2 if you know you will ride weekly.
Is the Giant Talon good for Nairobi commuting?
Yes, especially if your route includes rough sections, potholes, or unpaved shortcuts. Fit semi-slick tyres, lock out the suspension for tar sections, and you have a durable commuter that shrugs off Nairobi roads. Many of our Westlands and Kilimani customers commute daily on Talons. It is overbuilt for pure road commuting but that overbuild is what makes it last.
What is the difference between Talon 3 and Talon 2?
Three things. The Talon 2 has hydraulic disc brakes (Tektro) instead of mechanical, which is a huge upgrade for long descents. It has a better SR Suntour XCM fork with lockout instead of the entry-level XCE. And it uses Shimano Alivio 2×9 shifting instead of Altus 2×8. You pay KES 20,000 more and get meaningfully better long-term components.
