What each variant is best for

The absolute first-timer — Contend 3

You have never owned a drop-bar bike. You want to try Sunday Ngong Road group rides without committing your rent to it. The Contend 3 at KES 115,000 is the answer. Shimano Claris is entry level but it shifts crisply, the ALUXX frame is genuinely light (around 9.8kg), and the carbon fork takes the sting out of Kenyan tarmac. You will not outgrow the frame — you will outgrow the components in two or three years, and by then you will know exactly what to upgrade to.

The serious weekend rider on a real budget — Contend 1

Same frame family as the 3, but Shimano Sora 2×9 gives you an extra cog, better lever ergonomics, and noticeably smoother shifts under load on the Ngong climbs. At KES 155,000 this is the sweet spot for anyone who is confident they will still be riding in twelve months. Rim brakes are honestly fine for dry Nairobi tarmac and it saves you 20-30k versus the disc variants.

The endurance rider who does long Sunday miles — Contend AR 2

The AR frame is a different animal. Slightly longer wheelbase, taller head tube, D-Fuse seatpost and handlebar that flex vertically to eat road buzz, and clearance for 32mm tyres so you can actually survive the section of Kangundo Road that pretends to be tarmac. Add Shimano 105 R7100 12-speed and hydraulic discs at KES 215,000 and this is the bike we sell most often to riders training for the Iten to Eldoret loop or Sagana centuries.

Ngong Road Sunday group rides

This is where the Contend was born to live. The 6am roll-out from Junction to Kiserian and back on the Contend 1 is honestly one of the best-value cycling experiences in Nairobi. Sora shifting handles the climb up to Corner Baridi without drama, and rim brakes are fine because it never rains before 9am on the Ngong Escarpment (well, mostly).

Karura Forest tarmac loops

Not for the gravel — you want a Talon or Escape for that — but the tarmac perimeter and the KFS access roads are perfect first-timer road territory. The Contend AR 3 with 32mm tyres handles both surfaces without complaint.

Two Rivers to Ruaka commuter loops

Contend runs XS through XL. Rough guide: XS 155-165cm, S 165-172cm, M 172-180cm, L 180-188cm, XL 188cm+. But height alone is a bad predictor — torso length, arm length, and flexibility matter more.
